Battle Bruised and Filled With Holes

History:

Dr. Thomas Light and Dr. Albert Wily were brilliant scientists in the field of robotics, who worked together in a laboratory trying to advance the science. One day, they finished an extremely advanced prototype, but shortly after being activated, it started destroying the laboratory. Dr. Light immediately believed that the prototype's guidance system, which Dr. Wily had personally programmed, was the source of the problem and concluded they would start over again. Angered, Dr. Wily stole the plans and the malfunctioning prototype, eventually modifying it into Proto Man.

Three months later, Proto Man and Dr. Wily returned to Dr. Light’s lab so that they could steal more of Dr. Light’s robots and reprogram them for evil. By this time, Dr. Light had created Rock and Roll, his robotic “children”, and three worker bots: Guts Man, Cut Man, and Ice Man. With Proto Man’s help, Dr. Wily reprogrammed the three worker bots, turning them into his minions, and kidnapped Rock and Roll with the intent to do the same to them. However, Rock and Roll escaped before Dr. Wily could reprogram them, and Dr. Light rebuilt Rock into Mega Man when they returned to his lab.

Now, in the present, Proto Man and Mega Man are rivals: Proto Man is Dr. Wily’s most capable robot and his “general”, and Mega Man is Dr. Light’s champion of justice. Proto Man has helped Dr. Wily attempt to pull off a number of devious, wacky schemes to take over the world. These schemes range from bringing the moon crashing down on the earth, to replacing all the members of the government with robot duplicates, to reawakening an ancient tribe of mummified lion men. Dr. Wily is always plotting, and Proto Man always helps, but not out of any loyalty or respect for his creator: he does it for the fun of it, for the chance to match himself against his “brother”, Mega Man, and (although it’s a longshot) because just once, one of the schemes might result in success.

Personality:

Proto Man is one of the most advanced robots of his time because he is a robot that has emotions, so his personality and actions are remarkably human. He says himself that he is “programmed for the bad side”, but really, Proto Man only does things that interest or benefit him in some way. He regularly disobeys his creator, and often comments on how harebrained some of his schemes are, usually in a sarcastic way that employs some overused pun or cliché. He also does not share Wily’s fanaticism about destroying Dr. Light and Mega Man: he would be just as happy if Mega Man joined the bad side and helped them rule the world. However, since Mega Man flat-out refuses to join them, Proto Man is adamant that he will be the one to destroy his “younger brother”.

Although being a robot gives Proto Man some definite advantages, he also has a number of disadvantages. Like Mega Man, he can run out of plasma energy (used to power both himself and his plasma cannon), which will slow him down at best and shut him down at worst. He wears red armor and a protective helmet, but a few well-aimed shots from a plasma cannon can take him down and force him to perform some major repairs.

But as far as day-to-day interactions go, Proto Man’s kind of a jerk. He usually speaks his mind about things, particularly when it means getting to complain about something. And he may not always participate in activities, but he’ll certainly show up and keep running (and usually sarcastic) commentary. He considers most humans to be inferior to him, but he can appreciate the ones who are good with technology, and he’s usually tolerant of people as long as they don’t get on his nerves. He can be an arrogant loudmouth at times (at one point, he claims to have “the fastest blaster in the west”, but in practical situations, he has notoriously bad aim), but he’s good at getting the job done, whatever “the job” may be on that particular occasion. He’ll lie, he’ll cheat, or he’ll use semi-legal but dirty tricks, but if it means he wins in the end, Proto Man is okay with it.
